Upper control arm bushing removal WITHOUT press
first post on here and i just wanted to share my way of removing the upper control arm bushings. From the posts i have seen the consensus seems to be to use a hydraulic press or take them to a shop to get them out.
I do not own a hydraulic press nor was i paying a shop to do anything to my car. I found that using a gear puller. a ball joint press and some heat gets these out pretty easy and quick. Both the ball joint press and gear puller can be rented from most autozone or equivalent.
As you may or may not know the upper control arm has a "I" and a "V" piece. The "I" piece is healed in on to the V by the rubber bushings. The "I" can only come out one way by sliding thru the holes where the bushings are/ were. To tell the direction you can just see the inside washer smaller washer and tell it will fit through the bushing hole. Another way to tell is the rubber bushing you will push the "I" thru is bigger. Bigger than the other side at least. Other posts/videos probably explain this a lot better than i do. Reference those if you have never done it before.
For Removing the bushings, you can either use a blowtorch, saw, drill or whatever to remove the rubber lip between the large washer and the bushing hole. Use a Flathead screwdriver (or two) to get some distance between the area we just hollowed out.
This is all to get the gear puller's teeth in that gap. The attached photo is what I am trying to describe. BE CAREFUL but start to push the bushing out. the "V" WILL flex a bit. make sure it does not flex too much. It is best to just go slow and little by little. The last thing you want to do is break your control arm. Once there is some tension, heat the other bushing with the blowtorch. after some time you will see the bushing start to move. To speed up / make it come out a little better you can take out that inner lip like the other bushing but its not required. Keep adding pressure until the bushing pops out. The "I" should now be separate from the "V". Now all you would need to do is push the other bushing out and that is it!
Did these with both my uppers. No cracking or lasting damage. LMK questions, comments, concerns, and if this helped you at all !
