A lot... it handles most of the non-engine-related functions on the car.

warning chimes
interior lights
delayed accessory bus
dimming
DIC switches
fuel level
dashboard LCD display
PASSKEY/VATS/alarm
rear defogger
odometer
oil level
check gauges light
trip odometer

Various other little things...that's the gist of it. :) The list will be similar for most vehicles; engine/tranny stuff is handled by the PCM.

What does the body control computer do on a 96 C4?
It communicates, via a handshake, with the engine computer (ECM) for security reasons (theft protection). It also reads the pellet in your ignition key.

It maintains your odometer reading.

It controls the interior light timing.

It is programmed with the other components (ASR/ABS) and controls communications over the serial bus.

The body computer is actually the master computer and the others are slaves.
However, after the vehicle is running and the security handshake has taken place, if the body computer dies, the engine computer can run standalone to keep the car running. But, the next time you try to start the vehicle, it may not start due to the missing handshake.
