Default L98 Rebuild Questions

Hey guys, brand new here. Im looking to modify my L98, but was unsure about the fitment on a few parts. So im looking for suggestions

C4 Corvette with an L98 (stock)
i am not interested in running the tpi system, so i am currently swapping it over to a carbed setup. I have a holley 650 4 barrel (square bore flange) and im looking to get an intake that will work for the l98 and carb
so far my searches have lead me to either the edelbrock eps 2701 or
edelbrock rpm 7501
are these intakes compatible with the L98???

Once this is done i will be looking for a cam that works well with that setup.
I dont really have power goals, i just want something that will be better than stock, and work well with the intake and carb.
i am aware that going away from the tpi system means i will be sacrificing low end torque for a little more top end HP, and that is ok with me.
i just need a cam that will accomodate.

last question,
while i am doing these mods, i want to refresh my engine. It has 130k miles and i was hoping someone could send me a link to a few L98 rebuild kits. Head gaskets and all seals
probably wont touch bearings or rings.

Anyways, thanks for the read. Any info is helpful

What year is your car/engine?

Both manifolds will bolt on to an L98. Both should give you more peak power than the TPI - when properly tuned. The EPS would work well with the stock cam. You'll have to check hood clearance if your L98 is still in the C4. I believe the EPS is about 1/2 inch shorter than the RPM Air Gap. I would estimate that the EPS and 650 carb on a later L98 with aluminum heads (87-91) would produce around 300rwhp using the stock cam.

You'll also need to regulate the fuel pressure down for the carb and run a standard HEI distributor with mechanical advance.

Have you upgraded the exhaust? If there is any recommendation that can be universal for EFI andCarburation, it's that there is no cheaper horsepower than free flowing exhaust. As Carbureting a C4 negates any emissions compliance, long tube headers and free flowing mufflers with no catalysts seems to be the recommended path.

Any of the cams recommended to improve the TPI should give you an increase with the carburetor, while maintaining "street manners" or lower end torque. Many have recommended the Comp Cams 08-501-8, up to the 08-503-8. I've ordered a Howards 183215-10. I was torn between the -10 and the 183215-14.

I'm hoping the reputed torque boost of the TPI will cover any meaningful lower end loss. I went with the Howards grind as the factory gearing gives 65MPH at 1640 ish RPM.

All the comp grinds I was interested in were too close to the low end of the recommended operating range.

I've learned the hard way what it's like to have a cam with the lower end of the operating range to close to cruise speed. Always some Ponce in a Prius that seems to believe it's their duty to spastically apply the throttle resulting in speeds as low as low 40s to so close to the speed limit you can taste it. Like the anticipation of a sizzling steak... Only in areas of traffic or other valid reasons you can't pass, of course.

This grind gives me a ~350 rpm cushion (down to 51mph ish) on the low end, which is snug, but I'm willing to downshift, if that occurs. It's better than the 75 or so RPM I have in my Model A.

I like the earlier suggested EPS Edelbrock, it has a better chance of fitting under the hood than the RPM / RPM Air Gap or any variation of the Victor series.

Good luck with it.

We all like pictures (hint, hint).

The RPM air gap with a carb will NOT fit under stock hood. With a cowl hood on mine, im still struggling to come up with a good air filter setup as there is only 3.5" clearance under there.

Take a look at the Torker II.

Not really digging that Howards cam mentioned above (especially for a 2.59 gear car). With ~54 degrees of overlap: it will roughly have the low end behavior of a Comp 503 without the top end potential. At least it will sound cool.

Found this cam card:

Its actually a bit smaller than the advertised specs would imply. The earlier intake valve closing should help some.

I do kinda like this cam for use with a single plane intake: https://www.howardscams.com/hydrauli...cams-180885-10

Take a look a post number #9 in this thread:

He claims 3" clearance from airhorn to air cleaner lid is enough to maintain peak power. I have no first-hand info here. Just thought that might be of interest to you.

Yeah aware of all that thanks. My carb does not have a choke horn.
