Default Quick Smog/Air pump question

on my '89, I am planning on deleting the EGR and air/smog pump this weekend, kit came in today. My question is, how will this affect the stock catalytic converter? will it cause it to run too hot and cause issues? In the future, I plan on running some long tubes to high-flow cat, to some nice flowmasters or something along those lines, but temporarily, am I at risk of any big issues? I have no emissions regs to worry about. And also, for welding the holes on the exhaust manifolds, would it be easier to remove them first?

cat most likely won't work without air pump. Don't know if it will plug up.

I ended up just doing the smog pump removal. I left the EGR. I left the airline running back to the cat and just capped it off for now and I left the airlines on the exhaust manifold and just cap them off too. I’m not gonna worry about cutting them off and welding them closed because like I said I’m gonna be doing a full exhaust soon anyways. So it’s just a little bit of prep work for that pretty much.

Smog pump helps heat the cat faster. If you're not doing short runs, should be fine for a while. As for the manifolds, did you already cut them off? If you're going to end up replacing with long tubes down the road, save yourself some work and just cap the pipes after removing the check valves.

That's what I did. I posted photos, but the mods haven't approved it yet.

The air pump does not cool the CAT LOL it takes warm air pre heats the cat making it warm faster than stops blowing, removing the pump might through a code, my 93 pump been gone for years, if in a state that has smog test different story ,

I don't know if this will help but on my 89 one of the previous owners removed and welded shut the air line to the main cat, gutted it and replaced the pre-cats with new units, the EGR remained functional, or at least connected correctly. The previous owner lived in an emissions county and the car passed emissions, with no main cat, just the two pre-cats. I removed the A.I.R. pump and related hoses and valves and capped the exhaust manifolds as you have done. Your mod should have no real impact on the cat, as noted above, though I would probably gut it if it is original to the car, it very may well be clogged to a degree, since you have no emissions to worry about. In short, you should have no issues with what you have done so far.
