Re: Tires (GhostOfFreedom)
I have chrome ZR1s from wheelindex@aol.com and Kumhos (same size) from tires.com sitting in the garage waiting for spring. $900 for the wheels and $500 for the tires (shipping included) All I have to do is mount and balance..... ;)
I have 275 Kumhos on the front of the vette. They are great for the money. They grip well in the rain as well as the dry. The only thing about them is that my car is pretty noisy. I don't remember it being quite so noisy with GSCs up front, but I really can't remember, so I can't blame that. We'll see if when I replace the rears with some 315 AVS Sports (in my garage) the noise level goes down.
I've been putting Kumho Ecsta 712's on both my Z28 and Vet for the last 4 years and I luv 'em. Excellent tread pattern for wet driving and great grip in the dry.
I have had Bridgestone, Goodyears, and now Khumo's. The Khumo's are definitely harder. They corner well, but not like the GSC's. On mostly straight roads (would you believe two turns on my 20 mile drive to work? BORING!), I got 15k on the GSC's. At just over 10k on the Khumo's, I am showing very little wear (and I am just now rotating them for the first time). I haven't noticed a difference in tire noise.
If I lived somewhere with twisty roads, or if this wasn't my daily driver, I would get something more expensive/with more grip, but the Khumo's are working well for me, and my wife when I tell her it is AGAIN time for new tires.....
I'm the original owner of my '86 Vette Convertible. Still running 16" wheels.
As far as tires go...two sets of Goodyears...got not traction to speak of, not to mention, noisy as hell.
Since 1992, I've been using Dunlops. First thing I noticed...no more road noise. To me, tires are of 'softer compound' therefore the mileage isn't as good as that of Goodyear...maybe 5K miles less, if that. I'll sacrifice the mileage for less road noise.
I believe I got started with Dunlop's 4000 series, and now I'm using their 8000
series tires. No matter what the series, I don't believe one series has been better then another. I'm very satisfied with the consistant performance I get from the Dunlops. Their tread patterns have changed over the years, but the performance hasn't.
I do not use my Vette in rain or snow, so as far as wet weather traction is concerned, perhaps other Dunlop users can chime in, and voice their opinions.
I will say this...my engine is modified to the point that I feel its putting out around 350 Rear Wheel HP or better (no dyno results as yet, but its gotta be close).
Out on the highway, I really like the traction I get from the Dunlops. If I'm on 'blacktop' the tires will spin another 10 feet versus 'concrete'. I know, that's a given for anyone.
I really like the feel I get from the Dunlops...when I nail it from a 15 or 20 MPH roll. Usually the tires 'catch traction' at 4000 RPM's...and from 4K to 6K it feels as though all hell is breaking loose. Hold on!!!!!!
I like the way the 'nose' stays up in first gear...no bogging, and no laying down...before I pull 2nd.
I never could get this from the Goodyear Tires, and that was before I got heavily into modifying my engine. Too hard a tire, too noisy, and no traction for me whatsoever. Two sets of 4 convinced me, and I take very good care of my tires...air pressure, balancing, and rotation.
As far as some of the newer series of tires on the market today...again I'll have to defer to those who are running them. Maybe they are performing to a higher standard then the Dunlops I'm running,...but why would I want to change what I feel is 'working' for me? :yesnod:
If the Dunlops work for you, that's great, but I had the 315's on teh rear and my car is stock, and I would get the car loose in 3rd gear sometimes, 1st and 2nd gear forget it, if I went ***** to the wall, absolutely no traction, but if I controlled myself, I could maintain some traction.
The Michelin Pilot XGT Z$'s I had first were the best damn tires in the world.
I only have a couple hundred miles on my new Pilot SPorts, but so far they have shown to have superior traction, but I can break them loose if I want to.
I've been running Dunlap 8000's now for about 15K (and they are about ready to get replaced). I have found them to be much less noisy then stock or even the Pirelli's I had on last (interestingly they have discontinued there 16" tires so I had no choice but to replace last time). They also have really great wet traction, I am a daily driver, so I do see the rain, and I rarely get loss of traction unless it is a downpour. Dry traction is decent, but from standstill if you hammer it, they will never grip, just burn! I also wasn't too happy with tread life. Within 6K I noticed a TON of wear. And I was trying to not drive too hard, because I did shell out $500 for them.
Now that I had close to no tread left I am looking at replacing them with Kumhos. From what I have read seems they are a great deal, and perform very well. Plus they are only $87/tire at TireRack for the Stock '85 wheels. Can't beat those prices.

Re: Tires (GhostOfFreedom)
I just put 2 Kumho Ecstas on the front about a month ago replacing GSC's and love them! Im almost tempted to pull the GSC's off the rear even though they have a ton of tread left to put Kumhos back there too. The day after I had them put on I did a mountain cruise with some others here in the Forum and was stunned at the nite and day diff between them and the GSC's. They felt like they were nailed to the ground! I had a Z06 on my azz the whole way so I was really pushing them hard, lol. I dont think theres a better bang for the buck tire available for corvettes. I know Pilots are really good but at about 3 times the price of the Kumhos....I got them for $108 each here at the Tire Rack, $22 shipping and had them in my garage in less than 3 days :blueangel:
For those of you going with the Khumo tires, are you using the same size, front and rear. I note that they seem to come in 245 and 275, but not 285. What am I missing here?
i'm looking into the kumho 712 aswell, it looks like it's the best bang for your $ tire.
Any of you guyz know of any shops neer bufallo, niagara falls NY region that sell them?
it's worth the drive down even with the exchange
