I can't remeber exactly but it seems to me that you need to take the connection off the shift lever on the left side of the tranny. Put the tranny shift arm (that piece of stamped steel in the shape of an "L" that is bolted to the shaft coming out of the tranny on the left side) manually into park and then see if the little barrel on the end of the cable fits into it smoothly. If it doesn't then you need to adjust the cable barrel adjuster. Then, take it out, shift the arm manually into drive or low, can't remember, shift the console shifter into the same position, then try to fit the barrel into the arm. It should go smoothly. If it doesn't you can do some adjusting. If it is way off then I would suspect some problem with the cable, or shifter. Possibly the cable needs replacement, cracked housing, fraying of the inner wire, etc? Good luck.
Sorry. There is a thing that looks kind of like a small round barrel and it is threaded onto the end of the shifter cable down next to the left side of the tranny. It has a bit smaller spot on one end that fits into the shifter arm and then a small cotter pin goes through it to secure it to the arm. You just need to pull the cotter pin out and then the barrel will pop out of the shifter lever/arm. There is a lock nut that you may have to loosen to allow you to turn the barrel on the cable.
