Just came back from 400+ mile trip with my '89 coupe, hit two potholes on last few miles and after second one the "anti lock" indicator came on....Any ideas where to go from here??
Check your brake fluid level, it may be marginal. The Corvette alarming on the traction control and ABS and brake fluid level is sort of "Polish". Low fluid sensor will disable both the ABS and antislip systems.
If the car bottomed out, it could have damaged the wheel sensor wires, or a sensor could have gone bad, or the wheel bearings could have been loose enough to let the sensor stator flex into and destroy the speed sensor.
I would inspect the wheel speed sensors, the fronts are easier to get to than the backs, but it's still not a big problem removing them for inspection.
My 89 did the same thing on the Skyline drive trip. I pulled off on to the grass at the the Restaurant and the light came on. If you can't tell wich wheel sensor it is they are only 50$ dollars each and all four are different, start with the front Good luck it worked for me
This happened to me. ABS light would come on over potholes compromising my braking on dry, perfect pavement causing a scare. Sometimes ABS would come on under normal braking, causing a scare since it took a longer distance than you are used to stop due to the ABS system working.
Turned out the rear ABS wheel speed sensors. I removed them and they had a few mm of brake rotor metal filings, and road grime sticking to the magnetic surface.
I used a wire brush to clean them and this fixed the ABS problem.
The front wheel speed sensors (At least on the 93, I think its different though on other years though) are totally enclosed in a hub/bearing assembly so I couldnt check those, but just cleaning the rears solved my problems.
