Alright, since I will not be doing anything with the heads or replacing cam this year I have decided that I will stay with the stock heads and cam in the IROC ('88) for a while. I suspect the valve springs have weakened since they are now 15 years old and want to replace them as well as putting on a set of roller rockers 1.6's.
I will have valve seals replaced as well while I'm in there.
Is there anything else I should do while upgrading and also any recommendations on valve springs to fit the stock diameter.
I have an Accel lower intake as well as AS&M runners on already.
Hopefully after this the upper rpms will rev a little better. It may be just me but lately (at the track) it really seems to be falling flat up top. It used to pull better around 5000 rpms.
I used the Crane H-11 tool steel springs #99846 for iron headed SBC on my Impala, they have held up very well, over 40K miles and 50 passes down the 1/4 mile. I also upgraded to the GMPP 3/8 roller rockers at the same time.
I doubt it. Every stock spring I've ever measured is at its limit with the stock rockers (except the LT4 springs, they have extra room for the LT4 HOT cam).
A call to Comp Cams today and this is what they recommended. I told them it was for 88 L98iron heads, stock cam, going with 1.6 RR's. I believe these are stock diameter. Part#981-16.
I am thinking of installing 1.6 pro mags rr and just got off the phone with
comp cams. The guy said the 1.6s would not work with my stock cam,
(piston to valve clearance). I belived him and didn't order but I had not heard
that before. I know there are issuses with springs & valve covers.
Anybody in the know
Thanks :seeya
I went to order the springs today and the guy on the phone asked a few questions. Yes, 88 Camaro L98 iron heads, stock cam. Then he asked something about rotator something or other (he said one spring is shorter than the other.
My reply--I have no idea, I guess I need to look into that.
