Hey guys, I was just curious if anyone could answer this somewhat stupid question. Is it possible to port and polish and do an angle job on the cast heads? Im planning a rebuild for mid summer and want to make sure I can do everything i want.. Thanx
So the porting in a cast head is not good? I've considered some afr 190's, but honestly dont have the budget for that.. I just want every little bit out of it i can. Would some l98 heads work, or would that change up everything? I would like to keep the crossfire setup just because i want the car to appear stock under the hood.

Yes, you can do it. You can get some pretty nice improvements in the heads. HOWEVER, given the extra amount of time needed to port iron heads, I would personally say that the cost of buying a set of used 113's to port would offset the added time needed to port the iron heads. Also, the 113's have more potential than the stock '84 heads.
Long and short...if you have a lot of time and don't have a spare $400 or so laying around to get a used set of 113's, you can get some nice gains out of the '84s. If you have the spare $400 laying around, I'd go straight to the 113's.
The '84 heads are typical medium performance cast iron heads. Like it was stated above, aluminum cuts a LOT faster than iron. The head porting WILL help, but make sure you spend plenty of time inside that Crossfire manifold. Head work won't do squat with a stock manifold. I picked up over a half second in the 1/4 by porting my manifold. My heads are 150,000 mile, never been off, stockers. Good luck, and...

RACE ON!!!
The CF manifold is the biggest draw back in the CF. They just don't breath well enough to warrant the expense of heads, cam, headers, etc. However once the intake manifold issue has been addressed via X-Ram or other methods the rest of the mods will work well. 84 CF 91 ZR-1
Yes you can port the '84 heads. I ported and polished my '84 heads myself. It's a big job but the difference in the ports from the before and after is amazing. I finally got 1000 miles on the new motor so the strip is in the near future. I'm anxious to see what it'll do. If I need more, I'll probably get some Trick Flow Big Ports or G2's.
I spoke with a guy that ports for a living and he said the best out of the box performance head for a semi stock to stock Vette is the Edelbrock, in his opinion. Cost is @ $900
He would not even talk to me about porting AFR's because he says it is such a major job to take out so much material so I guess this explains why the port job costs more for these heads. He wanted $350 to port my stock 85 iron heads plus he can put larger valves in if you like. Email me if you want his info.
Be careful with your 84 herads as some of the early iron heads are prone to cracking. My 85 "624" heads are known to crack.

???? WOW, I have never heard of someone who will port heads that cheaply...especially iron heads....maybe it's due to the fact that he said that you can't take much out of them so there's not a whole lot of gain possible in the heads...but wow.

I looked at his prices, and those are awfully low prices for any port work. Does he have any information on results he gets? He mentions that he has a SuperFlow bench....I'd be curious to see what kinds of flow results he gets.
He will ask what port numbers you are looking for first. Then he has a library of porting info based on the head numbers where he can tell you what he has been able to get in the past. He will also tell you if a flow can not be had or if your goal is too lofty. He also wants to know your cam, rear gear etc and he will match the heads to the setup.
Like you said, he has the flow bench, and will/does provide flow charts for each set of heads.
i think you will be wasting your time. i wanted to have a crossfire that was fast....i even had a x-ram! she still was slow! i wish i had all the $ i wasted trying to make the crossfire fast. i wish you lots of luck....you will need it! p.s im not trying to talk poopie! :blueangel:
