Default Front Wheel "rumble" noise

I have been noticing a rumbling noise in my front left wheel area. I ran in an autox today and noticed when braking very hard for a right hander with a load to the left front there was a "Chatter" like effect. On the highway it is toned down, but almost goes away with standard braking on the street?

I'm curious if this could be attributed to a bad wheel bearing. A shop recently said they needed replacement and as it is a '89 with original hubs that very well could be. I'll check out the play in the wheel this week but thought the forum might have some good clues.

OK,

Checked into wheel bearings from local parts shops.

Autozone - Timken $169
Advance - BCA $168
NAPA - NAPA $227
GM Dealer - GM $448  :smash:

Has anyone had any experiance with these different manufacturers, the GM unit is looking way out of line on price?

Well, the GM unit is actually one of the other brands. I'm just not sure about the front. I know the rears are stamped NDH in 2mm sized letters. Got the rear from Pepboys for $140 with lifetime warranty. So at least I only pay for it once. The fronts are a little different for me because of the ABS sensors. I'd get the Timkin or Chicago Rawhide brands. NAPA is pretty much too expensive in most all things. I buy there when I have to have the better quality for certain parts.

First thing I thought of was worn out brake pads.. which make a light rumbling sound as they grind the rotors to crap. But if you're autoXing it, I assume you've already checked this?

CentralCoaster,

This noise is showing up after a set of new brake pads all around, stainless lines, new fluid and while they were off fress painted callipers.

I'm pretty convinced the wheel hubs are the problem, thanks

I researched the bearing/hub issue extensively a few years ago and posted the results on The Forum. Unfortunately, there was a crash and much of the early archives were lost....
The bottom line is that MOST, not necessarily all of the wheel hubs are manufactured by New Departure Hyatt. ergo the "NDH" you can see on the bearing seals if you REALLY look hard. Also, the tell tale gray primer overspray paint job, and a specific head marking on the wheel bolts which are produced by a division of Textron. If you see almost any one of those three, you will likely find all of them. These are the bearings/hubs that are in the Mr. Goodwrench boxes for $440 per...Buy 'em from Pep Girls and get a "lifetime" warranty. I think theirs are in Chicago Rawhide boxes. BCA also used them I believe.

BTW, your bearings front and rear are shot. Bet on it.

h rocks, Thanks for the information. Ithink I will be going with the less expensive offerings from the local parts outlets, not GM for this item. I'll look for the items you mention.

Why do you think both front and rear are gone??? Based on miles? something else? Just curious, I don't know exactly how to check the rear bearings.

You can check the rears by jacking it up and pulling hard at 12 and 6. Check your toe rods with a 9 and 3 grip. If you feel any movement, they're gone. Unless they have been replaced F&R, they will all need replaced. It's a very common wear item. Those of us that use their cars on road courses change them once or twice a year. If they were a tapered roller bearing, they would last almost indefinitely with proper maintenance.

You need to check these with the suspension loaded to get the idea of the bearings themselves. I lowered mine in the rear onto a jackstand. I used the big beefy rear camber rod to support that corner. My brand new rear hubs still move just a mm or so. Not much, but just a smidgen.

I submit that in his case he will be able to tell quite easily if his are worn out by performing the simple method noted above.
