Can you guys tell me what year/model had a D44? Also what year or model had a 3:73? Can I visually look up under a car to tell? I am looking for a wrecked donor car. Lastly, will a set of gears from a 70's IH Scout D44 work in a Vette rear?
All stick shift cars with a manual trans came with Dana 44(except 1984??)
Yep, except 84s (they all had D36s), and I don't think D44 gears from
other applications will fit because I believe one of the pinion bearing
surfaces is a different diameter on the Corvette D44.

I'm laughing now, I just read what I posted! stick shift cars with a manual trans, I crack myself up. Just shows you that you shouldn't post when you are tired!
You have been a huge help! I'd throw in some of those smiley faces if I knew how. I will print this out and take it to the swap meet next month. Will the smaller brake stuff from an '84-'87 car work on one of these D44 setups? I guess that I can use the spindles from the earlier car. OK, I'm building a kit car. It's out of the bag. I need to use the '84-'87 brakes so I can put 15" wheels on it. Thanks for the help. The only D44's that I have seen were really pricey. What is a fair price to pay for a rotor to rotor setup? A rebuild of the brakes is expected with any used setup. I understand that the Corvette brakes can get expensive. Any thoughts? Thanks, Rob
Rob, as far as interchangeability of gear sets, my understanding is that the Corvette D44 uses a Dana 60 pinion gear and a uniquely-sized ring gear, and that the only other vehicle who's gears would be interchangeble is the Viper (and I believe most of those came with 3.07's...).
Yes, you can use the early brakes on the D44, as all manual trans cars from '85-'87 had the D44 axle with those smaller brakes.
There is a company is southern california. Right now the name escapes me, they are big in the off-road scene.
I was told they have an adapter that makes the normal D44 gears work in ours.
From what I can find; Ours is actually a SUPER Dana 44, it has a mix of normal D44 and D60 sized parts, someone else above mentioned the D60 issue.
Anyways, I hope this is some help, if I think of the name I will reply with it.

Go figure, as soon as I hit post..
Toms Differentials in Paramount. They have a website too. http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/
Its been 3-4 years since I talked to them about the rear end swap, so not sure if they still do it.
I am familiar with Tom's diff's. I have Jeep experience and he is big in 4X4 stuff. He even does a tech column in the 4Wheel Parts Wholesalers Magazines. Ver reputable. The 4X4 guys take 3:73's out all the time for steeper gears. I have a set of D44 3:31's that I'll keep on the shelf. Thanks for all the help. Rob
