my '96 leaks a lot of hot air into the venting system. not so much as to render the a/c useless, but on mild days where just a vent would be nice, it comes out too hot.
is this a common problem, or do i have a leaky/stuck flap somewhere? any easy fixes? if not, i'm tempted to put a bypass valve on the heater core.
Just a guess - there is a door inside the enclosure for the heater core that is controlled by a small electric motor. Coolant is always available in the heater core. If the door isn't closing all the way, you will get heat added to the velntillation system. The motor for the door is on the outside of the enclosure and the door control rod attaches on top with a plastic piece that is adjustable. If the rod attachment is out of adjustment, or broken, the door will be part way open = heat entering your ventillation system. If it's just the controller, you may be able to fix it from below, but it is definitely easier with the dash pad removed (just did it last month - PITA). Good luck.
ya, i was afraid you'd say something to the effect that part of the dash needs disassembly... how much of it can i see if i crawl under there with a flashlight? i'm just wondering if deft fingers might be able to at least judge whether or not it's misadjuted or broken.
It's a "black box" roughly in the upper middle of the plastic cover over the heater core. You may be able to reach above it. The actuator rod hooks into an arm on the top of the motor to the driver's side. Good luck! Paul
