Re: Do TB Air Foils actually do anything???? (Dan Parker '96)
I have to side with you Dan.
This was a rather interesting thread...goodness. It all comes down to the stock TPI & LT1 throttle bodies that are designed as they are for liability reasons...prevent sticking from freezing and reliability on the warrenty side of things. The stock TB is rather small for high alittitude applications like here in Denver so I am just going to junk them on my T/A, Vette, (using BBKs), and keep the stock configuration on my Roadmaster. We perform two mods as bandaids to help them along for added performance such as the coolant bypass, and the airfoil...although, I would never do the bypass in Denver during the winter. The airfoil is just a stupid piece of metal until your car hits 4000 rpm. The gains are somewhat small, but they can be noticable. The airfoil does help with strokers, nitrous applications, and supercharging; but realistically, if one is going to do that, they are most likely going to get a 52mm or 58mm TB setup for these applications (well, I hope they would). Anyhow, if you want to spend the $50; more power to you. It is fun for people to buy these boltons such as the airfoil, ignition, catback, etc. It all does a little although often not what is advertised, and it gives the owner something to take pride in. The MSD 6A or 6AL box is probably my favorite bolt-on in these cars.
Oh, the manufactures sometimes limit performace based on regulation, or liability, cutomer comment. My '79 is a prime example of that. I think in 1975, they closed the shaker off to prevent the loud bellow that came from the intake. This was in part due to noise and in part due to emmissions...needed that stupid heat riser! I am having the shaker moded with the butterfly...it is about a 15hp increase. But, realisitically, until I get rid of the pellet converters, the car is choked-up anyway.
Re: Do TB Air Foils actually do anything???? (My 95)
This is a mod that makes a difference if you have major mods done already and are lookng for little things to give you an edge in racing situations. If you have a stock or nearly stock engine, it just doesn't make a measurable difference.
