I'm about to replace my u-joints and get my drive shaft balanced. I've seen several posts where people fix vibrations by balancing their drive shafts but I've never seen a post where someone balanced their half shafts. Can they be balanced? Does anyone have it done? Thanks in advance.
I never have and I've gone through probably 4 or 5 sets of ujoints in my halfshafts. I also didn't rebalance my driveshaft when I put newe ujoints into it. Smooth as silk from 0 to 170.
Re: Does anyone have their half shafts balanced? (Frodo)
I had the shop who pressed in my new u-joints balance the drive shaft (just because) and they "threw" in :skep: the balancing of the half shafts. I have had no vibration before or after. The shafts may be weaker now because of the little screws used to attach the weights
Re: Does anyone have their half shafts balanced? (Frodo)
I just saw a procedure for doing this in my factory manual. You use 2 or 3 hose clamps and rotate them until vibrations are minimized. I suppose you would have to have your tires perfectly balanced before you could do this and notice the difference.
Re: Does anyone have their half shafts balanced? (Frodo)
I find it hard to believe that halfshafts would cause much of a balance issue since that spin the same speed a the tire assembly and much smaller diameter.
Sure extreme cause, but otherwise no local shop is going to touch mine...they hardly ever handle an aluminum shaft...got to remember this is NEBRASKA!
Re: Does anyone have their half shafts balanced? (Frodo)
I replaced my aluminum ones with steel ones I had fabricated. Little washers were bent into curves to match the curve of the tube and welded into place to balance the shaft.
Re: Does anyone have their half shafts balanced? (No Go)
The shop that checked my drive shaft told me that Vette driveshafts are of high quality and rarely out of balance unless they have been physically damaged, usually with visible dents for example.
He said it was not necessary to check my half shafts but actually did so for no charge after my main shaft checked ok & my tires/wheels checked ok. The shafts were already out as part of the 4.10 gear installation and I was still trying to identify the cause of my high speed vibration.
