I'm thinking about buying a set of TPIS headers for my 1985 L-98 coupe. What I need to know is what is the size of the primary tubes? Are they 1 5/8" which is what I want for my L-98 or are they 1 3/4" which would absolutely kill all my low end torque. Any one know?
Forget all the stories you have heard about losing TQ with the larger headers. You wont. I have the 1 3/4" TPIS headers and lost no TQ. Actually I gained some across the board. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=470176
I am not positive what the measurements are, but I do have a set on my car. If I lost any torque, I sure could not tell, since it improved my times at the track. The engine revs higher and I have less resonance compared to before installing them.
Do a search in archives, this issue has come up many times and there is some great info on these headers.
TPIS only makes 1 3/4" headers. I think I'm going to go with these on my mainly stock L98, as most people have been happy w/them...plus they'll benefit any future mods.
its unlikely that any set of headers will kill all your low-end torque, but 1.75" on a stock engine may cost you a couple ft-lbs at WORST, though its unlikely that youll notice it at all
but anything you lose down low, you get back in midrange and top end
Have them on my Xfire. If anything, they fattened up the torque curve. Excellent header to build te rest of your mods around. They're sleepers too. With all the standard bracketing and bolts, you'll do a double take to notice they're headers. CAVEAT: They're built for ANGLE PLUG HEADS.
