I know the topic of gears has been beaten to death but after searching a while I couldn't find an exact answer.
Anyway I have an A4 84 with Edelbrock heads and Edelbrock base and runners for the tpi. Now I understand I want low numerical gears for a tuned port like 3.07s. I hope to be getting a Dana 44 soon and will probably need to put different gears in it. So with that said should I get 3.07s or could I go with 3.31s? I have also heard there is a 3.15 gear. Is that true?
I understand the whole thing about being out of my power band too fast with low gears. but would 3.31s be too low for the Edelbrock stuff? I know the Edelbrock stuff dosent flow like a miniram or a stealth ram but could I use 3.31s?
Except for a rarely installed option, most all '84's came with 3.07's. The only option was 3.31's. If the factory thought a Crossfire could take advantage of 3.31's, your slightly higher revving new set up, should be able to, also. Even lower gears would help your 1/4 mile, but do the math. How often do you cruise the interstate? What kind of revs can you/do you want to live with? I cross the finish line at about 4000 rpms. I could probably pick up a tenth or two with lower gears, but I spend a lot of time cruising at 85 or so. I don't want the "R"s on the highway that goes with the gears. Good luck, and...
See mine is a little different. I had the X-ram intake on it. I am doing a tuned port swap in spring. The X-ram would pull to about 6800 rpm. Valve float started at about 7200 (roller cam). So in other words the tuned port will not flow better, But it will give my way better torque. Thats what I want. If I want more horse power I will turn the nitrous up higher. Yes I do a lot of crusing on interstate but I could live with the higher revs if it would make the car faster.
What about a middle ground. Is there such a thing as a Dana 44 gear that is a 3.15?
I have a totally stock long block, L83 engine with a ported Crossfire manifold. *I* shift at 6000 rpms, with the factory cam. In my opinion 3.15's, even if they were available, wouldn't be worth the time or expense. 3.31's are only a 10% change. I would be looking at 3.45's or 3.54's. Again, it all depends on what you want, and what you're willing to live with. Good luck, and...
If I put in 3.45s or 3.54s with the tuned port I will be way out of my power ban. My rpm will go too high and I won't have any power. If I would have kept the X-ram I could have run 3.73s but not now no way. A stock honda would blow past me with gears that high.

With a TPI, yep, youll be out of the power band pretty quick.
