Just ordered EBC Greenstuff from the Tire Rack. It'll set you back around $150 for fronts and rears. I understand that the dust is minimal and they'll probably last the life of the car, unless you do a lot of autocross.
I have been using Ceramix since my upgrade and things seem to be OK and there is very little visible dust.
I was usind Carbon Metallic before and they were great performers but, made lots of black dust.
I had EBC Greenstuff on front and back. I didn't notice any difference in dusting from stock pads. Although, they seem to clean-up easier.
The rear pad wore out in about 18K miles. Switched rears to NAPA (unlimited warranty ~$110) about 3K miles ago. No dust whatsoever and I don't see any wear on the rotors either (only a cursory inspection, however).
Front EBC pads look about 40% worn, no significant wear on rotors, i.e. can't feel any ridges on edges of the pad path.
I do occassional auto-x, mountain crusing. Wife is very hard on brakes, she thinks both pedals should be pressed with maximum force (and wonders if the digital speedo will read 200)!
I can't recommend or condem the Greenstuff pads. There doesn't seem to be any significant difference in wear, dust or stopping power over stock.
John- I'm thinking about EBC Greenstuff pad for my 87 which will be used primarily for low-speed autocross and a couple of track days each year. Do you have any idea why the rear pads wore out so quickly?? 18K is pretty grim pad life especially with the fronts doing better. I would assume that the front pads should wear quicker unless you have a different brake bias spring installed.
Hawk has the racing brake pads made for x-cross and racing, but the higher performance pads are noisier and wear your rotors down quicker, thats just the cost of running your car at a higher level. The Hawk HPS might be good if you x-cross only once in a while and do some hard driving at times. JMHO
I have Hawk HPS on my 92 and they are a very good auto-x pad and work fairly well for occasional track use. Most suppliers don't show a rear HPS pad for the 84-87 but I have been told that the later rear pads will fit on the rear brakes of the early C4's.
I'm not too concerned about how much dust it makes since I wash my car all the time when I drive it.. what I'm concerned most with is god forbid I have to nail my brakes (i'm in NYC) I dont wanna smack into someone so the stopping on normal street driving is what is most important
As I understand it, rear shoes wearing out fast is pretty typical. Probably has to do with using the rear calipers for the parking brake. I'm guessing that there just isn't enough freedom to completely relieve the pressure on the pads to the rotor. I know the pads never "disengage" but the pressure should be completely released.
Another problem I had with the EBC was the noise maker never made any noise. The first indication that the pad were low was the metal-to-metal contact between the pad backing and the rotor (good-by rotor).
Don't get me wrong the EBC pads are good at stopping. But they are advertised as "low dust", and maybe they are, but not so you would notice. I wouldn't buy them for that feature, but I will probably buy them for the fronts, again.
I've had Hawk HPs on my LT4 for about six months and I am pretty happy with them. Moderate dusting but very good stopping power. I had to pull the fronts off and use some disc quiet on them because I had a pretty loud squeal at very low speed (apprx. 5-10 mph). It was loud enough to be irritating. The disc quiet worked prefectly. No noise at all now. Also had a chance to inspect the front pads pretty closely and the rotors. Everything is in excellent shape. So I would say the Hawk pads are worth a look. I am strictly a street driver - no track no auto-x.
Don't go cheap on the pads - anything you save in the short run will come back to bite you later, IMHO.
