Default Timing on 87

One of my friend want to lend me his timing light. Could anyone tell me how to use them? (i.e. when we adjust the distributor do we just rotate the distributor cap or we have actually unscrew the hold down clamp and rotate the distributor shaft. By the way my car start ok now. I just want to make sure the timing is ok). I have an 87 vette. What is correct setting for my 87? Thanks

Stock timing setting is 6* BTDC for '87. When you loosen the holddown clamp on the distributor your twist the distributor cap.

Make sure you find the timming mark on your balancer before you even start. You may want to mark it with yellow crayon so you can see it easier.
