Re: possible t-stat problem looking for help....... (bil-loc)
I think it would be the vacuum actuated valve being stuck closed. If the thermostat wasnt working your engine would probably overheat. The heater valve for my car is about 12 inches from the firewall directly inline with one of the heater hoses, passenger side. Its valve can be operated manually cause the lever is on the outside. Or you can startup your car and swing the heat/cold temp selector and see if it moves the lever.

I agree it isn't the thermo!
There have been a number of posts over the past few weeks about lack of heat. The culprit was blocked heater cores, not leaking heater cores.
The solution was to flush the heater core. You can do this two ways (maybe more)
1) reverse the hoses at the firewall, this will reverse the cooland directional flow
2) disconnect heater hoses and run fresh water through the heater core
