Default Meziere pump and bizarre cooling problem... Solved!!!!

For the gory details see this thread: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=511840

In a nutshell. All of a sudden when I turned on the A/C and Headlights there wasn't enough power to run the electric water pump. It had worked without problem for the past year.

Ran a new engine to frame ground wire. No change.

I replaced the alternator, no change. (Probably would have gone soon, anyway).

I took the pump to Meziere, the tested it for 2 hours and apologized when they couldn't find anything wrong (I'll post another thread praising them). Still no change.

Finally, replaced the RELAY ($11) used to control the pump. Viola... back to normal.

Now, I had another relay go out about 6 months ago, so you'd think a reasonably intelligent person would check that first.... but nooooo...:cuss

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys.

Glad you figured it out.

No, but I've never had a problem out of any other relay, I just carry a spare of the one I use for the Meziere. Just a 12 volt 30 amp relay, available at any radio shack.

Maybe this is the issue. It's been my experience that RS electronic parts are not very high quality (lowest bidder wins?), I bet those RS relays are not really made for underhood temps/conditions (105*C and lots of water). I purchase Bosch relays from my local autoparts store, they're made for underhood abuse.

I wonder if the factory fan relay would hold up well for this application. You can buy a kit from ecklers to upgrade the older c4 fan relay to the newer style. I did this on my 86 I used to have with the fans. But I was thinking about using the kit for the water pump.

I'm using an automotive relay. It's supposed to be able to handle 20amps. Since this is the second one that's failed I'm going to cut it open and see what's happening. The pump draws 10amps at 12 volts.

The second one failed "softer" than the first one. The first one gave me one indication of a problem then the next day it just stopped working completely.

I now carry a wire that I can insert into the relay base to bypass the the relay altogether in an emergency.

Excellent!

I generally use NOS brand relays for things, but I have used the 30 amp relays for fog lights that they sell at Autozone too. The NOS ones comes with a harness ad are quite expensive though at $30 each. The Autozone ones run about $7.

anyone have experience with the 4-40amp relay set that Summit sells???
It's like $60 with all four pluggable relays on a single board. I figured i could use one for the fan override, one for the water pump override, one for the water pump auto on/off and one as a spare. This way i would have auto and manaul overides for both the fans and water pump, plus a spare relay. But if the relays are garbage, i'll have to go with something else.
