Stop the car for driving about 40 minutes. GURGLE GURGLE GURLGE. I open the hood and look at the overflow resevoure (sp?) for the radiator...it looks as if it is boiling! This normal.............i don't remeber this happeneing last spring. (CUrrent Temp Outside 60's coolant temp was within normal range).
When this happens, I would say that either the fan is not working properly, radiator needs external cleaning, or the coolant mixture is not right. You say that the temps are in the normal operating range. I would assume that would be 180-230 for our cars. 212 is the boiling point for water. Anti-freeze/ coolant raises this boiling point. Change your anti-freeze if you haven't lately or are unsure of the mixture. It should be 50/50 distilled water/antifreeze as a general rule more or less for your region. Make sure that your fan is operating properly. make sure that there isn't any junk bllocking your radiator fins. Also, your temp sending unit for your guages could be bad. I would say to check these things out first.
If it is normally running below 212 then boils off after you shutdown, check the expansion tank pressure cap (used to be called the radiator cap, but now it's 3' away from the radiator). I think they're supposed to hold 14 or 15 lbs. This will keep the coolant from boiling to about 260 degrees.
problem solved.....The overflow tanks cap was not on,,. i snapped it back down and drove her for about 25 min to get her all hot (sounds like a dirty story!) and no boiling over. So, so far so good :flag
