I think it works nice the way it is now. More people need to introduce themselves to the search link. :)

Whats wrong with the Tech Tips forum? The purpose of the forum is to encourage total participation. That's how we "meet" "new" friends.

Educating members to use the "search" link (as advised by scorp) is the answer.

I'm with Scorp... I know I sound like an azz when posting to an all-to-common question with "Use the Search feature"... But you tend to get disinterested in answering the same question 50 different times.

I like the idea. I'll think about what i may have to offer and then i'll put it in my sig (as was suggested in the other thread). my opion ... if your only advice is use the search then you don't need to respond.

Using the search feature is nice if the topics are recent. However, I've ran into situations where I remembered a thread regarding a specific topic, but could not find it in the archives. Maybe altering the archiving date algorithm is in order...

Using the search is the best thing we all can do, especially to avoid dupes.(on the same day).

Adding more info to your sigs is not the answer either.
Too many people attach their sig to every single post. We only need to see it once per post and not in every single post.

What most don't realize is that if you click onsomeone's user name, you can view their profile including their sig. That should be enough.

While the Tech Tips are not really FAQ's they do help a lot for general maintainence items.

This forum is huge, there are many features I have yet to check out and I'm on here most of the day(except at work)

I really like this forum. I'm kinda computer challenged and I'm learning new stuff every time I get on this thing. I think it would be nice if we had another listing under the Community called" topic knowledge" where subjects are listed and instructions, advice, parts needed and where to get them, etc. For example: Installing a Hurst shifter, It would list the cost, tools needed, how many beers it takes, and results. Maybe how it compares to other short shifters. For one on one the expert could leave his e-mail address. This might free up or organize the archieves. I don't know how you would do this, but I'd help.

I think it is a good idea, and should be left as a individual option to place your SME (subject matter expert) area in you sig. The search option has worked well for me. Only the very technical questions would benefit from this approach.

how about a sticky post that define's this area and has links to the product review's, search engine, and anything else that could give people quick access to FAQ?
maybe a list of some FAQ's that are known to be in the search archives.

Maybe the default setting in the user configurations should be "Do Not Append my signature to this post".

What are your work hours? I see you post messages around the clock! :lolg:
