Default Do I need a new Alternator?

The alternator is working fine, the problem rests in the back bolt.
IT keeps on unscrewing, I screw it all the way down, but it won't "stop" it will just keep on spinning. So its like the screw or the thread in the alternator is screwed.

Any suggestions?

I can't wait to hear the responses as I can't unscrew my nut without the stud turning inside. (sound kinda kinky) So, I left it connected, while I'm working on other things. :skep:

I have a '92 and there is no stud on mine. There are three attachment points:
1) There's a big torx screw in front that threads into the big aluminum accessory bracket.
2) There's a hex bolt that goes through a brace attached to the ex manifold and screws into the back of the alternator itself. This one strips easily. You can try tapping it, if that doesn't work you can maybe tap it oversize and buy an oversize bolt at the hardware store, or you can helicoil it. The other option is to just wait until the alternator quits altogether (usually not a long wait) and then the problem is solved since you have a new alternator with good threads :) .
3) There is a long torx bolt that goes through the accessory bracket, through the alternator, through the accessory bracket again, and is held on by a hex nut on the other end (this bolt is kind of a "hinge" for the alternator". Is this the one you can't remove? If so it's not a stud, you just need to get a torx bit to hold the bolt from the front while you loosen the hex nut on the back.

I'm talking about the nut holding the big red wire on the alt. not the mounting hardware.
But thanks for the reply

You should be able to replace the output bolt if it is stripped. You will have to take the alternator case apart. If the nut is stripped, just get a new nut.

Ah, now I get it. I too had that problem once. I tried holding the plastic insulator with pliers while trying to loosen the nut, but the plastic crumbled and I then had no choice but to remove the stud to replace the insulator, so don't try that.
