I have the Stage II (160deg) chip, I got it really cheap on Ebay. It does make a difference. I really like the lower t-stat, my car rarely gets about 190F now. I swapped to the old chip once when I was debugging some problems, I was amazed at the difference. The stock chip really sucked! Suprisingly I got better gas mileage with my Hypertech. I get about 25MPG on a long highway trip. I have an 85 Auto.
Get the K&N, it does make it sound a bit better, you can tell it helps it breath. Plus it lasts forever! Just clean/oil it every once and a while.
While I really like my chip, I wouldn't pay retail (~150), check ebay. I was able to get mine for only $40! It was worth it.
If you are willing to pay $150 then go with a Fast Chip, I have heard really good things about them.
Thanks guys I looked up a company http://www.superchips.com
They claim a 20hp increase with there plug in chips.
Somebody told me that the aftermarket chips will ruin the
catalytic converters. Anybody know for sure?
I know if you run rich all the time you can kill the cat. I know mine mixes pretty rich at WOT, enought the drivers behind me get that strong gas smell. But I like that smell of power. I've had mine for
2 years, driven over 10K eith it, and everything just fine. I wouldn't worry about it.
Oh yeah, the other thing people worry about is emissions (if you have testing in your area). I passed with lower scores using the performance chip then stock!
Wether or not the chip works really depends on what you are looking to get from it. If you are looking for cooler engine temps then the Hypertech chips (thermomaster) will do that for you. If your looking for more HP, then I think you're going to be disappointed. I had a stage 2 chip in my car and all it did was make the car run rich. It did absolutely zero for performance.........it actually hurt performance a bit. I tested it at the drag strip with several runs with the aftermarket chip vs. the stock chip and the stocker was quicker on every run. If you swap your heads/cam and then you'll need to get a custom chip burned to get the car to run properly, but until that point I think the aftermarket "off the shelf" chips are a waste of money. A low temp fan switch and a lower stat will make the car run cooler and costs a fraction of what a chip does.
