I have a digital multimeter and MAF sensor test tool I purchased from Mid America. I'm not 100% sure on how I am supposed to use it. The instructions mention 10 ohm's. Yet on the multimeter I only show 20 ohm's.
Can anyone assist me in making sure I'm using the multimeter to test this correctly?
I am not familiar with a way to test the MAF with a multi meter. Generally, If it is bad the car should run the smae with it plugged in or unplugged. You might try tapping on the MAF while the engine is idling to see if the tapping efects the idle. It should not change the idle. Do you have any codes that make you think the MAF is bad?
In the Mid America catalog I saw a section for testing tools, which included a digital multimeter and a Mass Air Flow Sensor Test Tool. As I said in the original posting, the instructions mention 10 ohm but the tester has 20 ohm. I'll look at it again and see if it makes any more sense, but I've worked with the old analog multimeters and never had problems using them before.
As far as symptoms... a few weeks I drove it a mile and it worked fine. When I left the grocery store the car would start but the engine would die when I gave it gas. When I disconnected the air intake hose from the air tunnel the car would start and run... rough, but at least it would run. I managed to drive it home like that.
Bill: I did the same as you in that I purchased a MAF testor from MA and tried to use it with my digitial Fluke meter. It was worthless!!! I had to get an engine scanner to see how bad my MAF really was. It was shot and I did not get any computer codes??? I do not know how to help you except to advise on the scanner or find a friend with a good MAF and swap out to see if that solves your problem. I can tell you that the MAF is the most expensive sensor on the car! If you have to buy a new one, suggest you get a price from Jeff Kopp. Regards, Sam. (PS: I once lived in Hendersonville)

I think I have that name and contact info from a previous post. Disappointed to hear that my hard earned money was for naught on the equipment purchase from MA. Hendersonville is a nice area. I almost purchased a house, hmmm, on or near Indian Lake Road. It was a real hilly area. The house I looked at had a two car garage and because of the hill the end garage had enough room for a huge hydraulic lift. Unfortunately another family got their contract in first.
Your 20 ohm on the multimeter is probaly the scale setting. Most digital multimeters will give you scale settings (ohms 2,20,200,2k etc.) these scales are the max amount of ohm's you can measure in that particular scale.
Hope that makes sense.
