I dropped off my intake base, runners and plenum to be powdercoated, and told the guy to mask off the injector openings and all the gasket surfaces. Now I'm thinking we're better off just shooting all the gasket surfaces that might show since I don't want any aluminum visible around the edges. The powder is baked on at 400+ degrees anyhow, what do you think? Does anybody have any thoughts or experiences they want to share?
I would definitely mask off the injector holes. You dont want to change the size of the holes by the thickness of the powder coat. You should also be careful about the TB surface too, you dont want a vacuum leak from the coating.
My local powdercoat shop has some silicone plugs to put into the injector ports much easier to do than tape, also there is special tape that is used mask stuff off because the oven gets to 400f ,too hot for duct tape....
A friend of mine powder coated 2 of my intakes and didn't mask off anything. I carefully took the time to clean out any bolt holes and I did clean off the overspray from the intake to head mating surface but left everything else. The injectors are a little more snug than stock which makes me feel better about them.
He also had coated the throttle body mounting surface, I didn't clean it either. I have no leaks at all on the intake and have been very happy with it.
What you have to remember about a good powder coating job is that it leaves a VERY smooth finish which seems to seal just fine.
