Default Idel Speed 88 Corvette

I know the computer is supposed to controls the idel speed. The manual says the speed should be between 400-450 RPM. Seems to slow to me. What should the speed be out of gear with an auto tran? Is there a procedure to set the speed from scratch?

Mine idles at about 6-700 rpm in drive, and about 7-800 in park.

There is a procedure for setting the TPS correctly, on 65Z01s site.

Idle speed for an '88 with stick or auto is 450 RPMs. You will need two special tools:
balance manometer (J-23951) and idle air valve plug set (J-33047), and instructions. It might be best to have an experienced tech do the work.

I would guess that it would be around 750 rpm. My first question is: what is your idle speed. Second: What is going on that you need to adjust your idle. Maybe there is a problem.

I have a 89 coupe and the idle adjustment is very easy......if you can follow a procedure. You need a tach, voltmeter and that is about it. It is a good idea to set the timing before you make this adjustment. Email me if you want a procedure. I use the procedure as described in the Helms manual. Regards, Sam

Bob, search for the procedure to do the Idle Air Control valve(IAC). No special tools needed just a paper clip. While your at it buy some throttle body cleaner and clean that TB. When you get around to it do the TPS you'll need a good voltmeter for that.

Thanks for all the HELP. I should should be able to make the adjustment now. The reason I need to do the adjustment is the pervious onwer instead of maintaining the car just adjusted the idel set screw on the TB to correct any problems.

The 400-450 is your "base" idle, that's with the timing wire unplugged. After you set it and plug the wire back in your idle should be between 600-700.
