Default Newbie Mod help

Ok, my dad gave me a 91 vette (L98 i think) for HS graduation. I'm gonna be selling by firebird and am looking at getting $6-7K for that. So I'll have mabey $4K to mod the vette. It already has a borla catback and some sort of performance chip (guy before my dad installed it).

anyway, I was thinking about doing headers, but i don't know what else i can/should do for $4k. I've been working on my v-6 for the last 2 years and that's all i really know about. Any help or advice (what mod's to do, what brands are best) would be apriciated. :seeya:

Take the '91 and the $4k and get an LT1 :D

Hmm... intake? gears? torque converter? TIRES? could get your heads done for that much EASILY and maybe have them put a cam in...

First off, welcome to the Forum and congrats on your new Corvette, you lucky guy you!

That said, with $4k to spend you can have a 12sec Vette that is very streetable; your nearly stock '91 likely runs very high 13s now.

To start you off: remove the "frisbee" (check on my site), installing a 160deg thermostat & fan sw, do the coolant bypass at the TB, install an AFPR.

Have a TransGo shift kit & 2,000rpm TC installed into the A4 to realy liven up the shifting and get a nice chirp on the 1-2 shift.

I'm sending you e-mail with a proven recipe for intake, exhaust, heads and cam work that should use up most of your budget and set you up with one quick L98.

Enjoy the ride and save the wave.

You should drive the car for 6mos-1yr before to give yourself time to decide what it needs, and what you want out of the car.

Id hold off on major engine mods, but do your research by reading the forum. Small mods, porting, exhaust work is ok.

As for headers id get some Hooker Longtubes and a high-flow Random Tech cat, but with that Borla, its gonna be loud.

I'm with Vader. Just tuck the money aside for now. You will likely need it for regular maintenance and repairs. Then as things break you fix them faster/better.

Enjoy it and get used to it as it is for now as it is a big power step up from that V6 you had. Learn the car inside and out, then decide what you want out of it. By the time you do you'll of made some interest on your money.

I agree with everyone else. Put the money in the bank and take some time, at least 6 months probably a year, to decide what you want to do and what you need to fix. I know if I had 4K to spend on my '96 it would almost all be for repair/maintenance.

Speaking from experience.........Put some flowmasters on it, and save the rest for college. You'll already have tons more power than your old Firebird and the sweet loudness of an L98 can keep you happy for a loooong time. Watch out, your Vette will eat up that $4,000 dollars in no time if you aren't careful.
