Default Belt Tensioner Movement.

On my 90 auto while the car was idling with hood open i noticed the belt tensioner was moving a bit. It moved about an 1/8 inch back and forth as the belt wobbled. No sqeals, no slipping, i checked all the pulleys to make sure they were tight. The belt moves more with air conditioner on. I did remove my frisbee about a year ago this is first i noticed though. Is that un reasonanble? It looks better when i rev the throttle. Is my tensioner going?

That's my guess, is that the A/C clutch engaging is causing the belt tension to increase suddenly.. so the tensioner moves accordingly. Mine was more like 1/4" of movement when the smog pump pulley was loose.

If I were you, I'd put the frisbee on to see if its absense is the cause. Once you've confirmed that, take it back of course!

Of course, its possible that you need a new tensioner spring. If the spring weakens for whatever reason, (fatigue, corrosion) then it will bounce around more.

There should be some marks one on the spring side and 2 ,spaced out, on the housing right across from the one. As long as the one mark on the spring side is BETWEEN the opposing 2 , you should be ok.

That's what it's supposed to do. As noted below, check the static location of the adjustment marks. If it's in the zone, don't fret it. You would notice a difference in the tension of a new one vs. your current one, but for a driver, you should be fine.

I would also advise that if that belt's more than two years old, dump it. It's cheap insurance to go to Autozone and get a replacement. Don't forget, the backside of the belt drives your waterpump.
