Gang,
My '84 has a 'raw-fuel' smell coming from the engine area. I have replaced the fuel canister and the air filter...the only two ideas the Hayes service book gave me. Any ideas? It still smells like it could be coming from around the fuel canister, but I don't know what else to do.
I'm not sure about the '84, but my '88 has a metal line that runs from the fuel tank, up along the driver's side frame. If the '84's the same, the metal line ends between the engine and the radiator area, on the frame rail, and changes to a rubber hose. Check for deterioration of that hose--- follow it all the way to the charcoal canister and I bet you'll find a leak.
IndyVette,
I had the same problem with my '91 the day after I bought the car. It turned out to be a cracked fuel injector that had to be replaced. At the time I couldn't find it myself, so I took it to the Chevy dealer and they found it within 15 minutes. Hopefully this is not what your problem is - the dealer work was not cheap. Hope this helps, and good luck!
