I changed oil in my 95 yesterday. Every thing I read says use 4.5 qts.. To get oil on the full line on the dip stick I had to use 5 qts.. I checked several times and it's right on the full line. I checked again this morning with cold engine and it's right on the mark. What's up with this? Do I have to much oil in the car? When I put the new oil filter on I filled it with oil first. Does that have anything to do with this? Thanks for your opinions.
A Chevy small block holds 5 quarts of oil which includes the oil in the oil pan and residual oil inside the oil filter. If you check your owners manual it will indicate that an oil change without changing the filter will require 4.5 quarts. An oil change with a filter change will require 5 quarts. The best time to check you oil is after the car has sit for a few hours on a level surface. I usually check mine in the morning before I start it. Hope this information is helpful.
I'm going to re-check my manual in the morning cause I swear it says 4.5 quarts INCLUDING the filter, as well...I go by the stick too but it just bothers me now.... :)
The 4.5 quarts is the same amount of oil that brings the oil into the safe range of the engine and lower part of the dipstick. The extra 1/2 quart brings the oil to top of the dipstick. Too much oil would be 1 to 2 quarts more then necessary.

Factory owner manual for my '95 says the same, 4.5 qts WITH filter change. But I use 5 qts. The El Cheapo haynes manual says 5 qts also.
