The way I understand it, even the LT1's and the LT4's require a different controller....So now there's one that says it's good for a 96/97 LT1. Is that legit?
You can program an LT4 with the f-body Lt1 programmer, an LT4 with a LT1 y-body or b-body programmer, just has to be the correct year. I think Hypertech has different part numbers to confuse the used programmer market. I think the 96/97 f-body programmer is for the 96/97 LT1/4 f-body, not sure how different it is compared to the 96 only model. I suspect a 06/97 f-body programmer will work on any 96 or 97 LT1/4 including all 96 b/f/y bodies and 97 f-bodies.
It is beginning to look like finding a controller model and year specific to my 96 LT1 vette, is like finding the old proverbial needle in the haystack.
Perusing through the Ebay listings just gives me a headache. I don't see how anybody can be certain what they are actually getting on Ebay and for 200 bucks or more, that could be a rather expensive mistake.
Seems at this point in time my best bet is to just cave in and go purchase a new one. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where the best deals may be found on one of these gadgets? MidAmerica lists them for $329, but they are on backorder.
$300 is about as low as you'll find for a new one.
Do you have a laptop computer? If so, you can do a lot more with an AKM cable and a LT1EDIT software running on your laptop, and for less than the cost of a Hypertech: http://carputing.tripod.com/ :yesnod:
Another option is to mail your PCM to a tuner and let them do it. I went to Brian at BVD Performance and he did lots more than a Hypertech can and only charged me $200. Disabled rear O2 check, disabled CAGS, retuned the WOT A/R ratio, fans, gear change, tweaked the ASR.
Have you checked the C4 Parts section? Used HPPs pop up from time to time.
My personal suggestion would be to grab a used HPP for $200 and use it for fan settings only (maybe shift points too?). If you want more later down the road, sell the HPP for $200 :D and have the PCM custom programmed for a small fee. Or buy OBD2 LT1-edit for $550.
