I have a 84 vette and been thinking about changing to tpi has anybody went throught this.Whats the pains and the gains.is it worth it. Thanks EDMGUY
There should be a NOTICABLE gain just by popping on the TPI intake, but is it worth the hassle?? You would have to change your accessories / brackets, new ecm/wiring harness, new fuel pump/fuel lines, and of course the whole TPI intake system. Not sure what sensors you have also.. Also you'll need a MAF and burn off modules/relays if you go with a pre 88 MAF TPI ecm/intake..
Not sure if it is really worth the hassle.. Might be simpler, if not even cheaper to go and buy a new engine and pop a carb on it..
Have the fuel pump and the engine is new with world 2.02 heads.do they make a tpi system for 84 heads?I know 86 vetts had the center bolts but anybody know about 85 ?EDMGUY KEEP THEM RACING!! :flag   ps Would the hood still fit or would I have to replace it??.
the heads are simply pre-87 (meaning the center intake bolt threads are angled differently- and post-87 intakes will fit with minor machining to the bolt hole of the intake base; and you use old-style valve covers as opposed to centerbolt ones). So otherwise, they're chevy small-block heads. the TPI conversion will be a big pain as I'm sort of in the middle of it myself.
If I understand correctly, a carb switch will be easier since you don't need the ECM and harness, but the trade offs are you need to know how to tune a carb correctly, you'll get lower mpg and may not pass emissions. you'll also have to fiddle with shift points and the VSS.
But TPI will open the door to future intake mods such as superrams, minirams and simplified forced induction (since all the wiring and computer work will be in place).
If youre seriously set on TPI,realize that the TPI itself isnt alot of money since you can buy a whole set up for a few hundred if that. Its the wire harness, relays, sensors, ecm youll need along with the fuel pump and other mods that are the most work.So I usually say if youre gonna go and do a TPI swap,if you can afford it,slap on a Miniram.Basically, with a harness kit that has everything you need, plus the MR intake, youll be better off in the long run,or heck even with a Super Ram set up.The intakes are easy, its just the other things you gotta do first.Dont sell yourself short on a TPI.If cost is a major factor, then a complete used TPI can be had,and buy either a complete harness or order a kit made by someone and swap out the pump and hook it up and tune.I just dont think upgrading just to TPI for the money invested is all that much over the Cross Fire. They can be made to perform and Ive seen a few examples push out over 350 HP.Make a planned goal and take from there.
Thanks alot of good advice and alot to plan.I will be switching to tpi and I will have to look at all the options. Thanks for you time EDMGUY :flag
