Heater core done, it was pretty easy.
Whoever wrote that huge "pull the dash out" article was a friggin' crackhead.
You don't pull the dash, instead, pull the passenger seat.
Pull the hush panel, drop the ECM and the door control module.
Remove the support bar going from the door pillar to the dash.
Use a 7mm to take the cover off the heater box.
Pull the cover, unbolt the core, re-install.
Drink beer and laugh at webpage showing guys pulling dash.

Actually, no this magazine article here. http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c4/jonm//c4heater01.jpg
But after looking at what you did on your page, I'm assuming you read the article.:(
I started disassembling the dash and then decided to check my Haynes manual. Oddly enough, its also said to remove part of the dash, which is totally uneccessary. After reading what had to come out, I just decided to feel around and noticed there are really only two 7mm that are tricky to get at but not impossible. A 1/4 ratchet with a short extension and it was no problem. I have been putting this off since Sept because it was made out to be such an ordeal by everyone. Not trying to slam anyone that has gone the long route, I just want to let people know there IS another way to do it and just because some magazine printed an article, doesn't make it gospel.

Yeah, thanks alot for the tip. I got over 150k on my '85, and the works when I got over a bump. Course, when I go over antoher bump, it stops, etc.... :smash:
I'll have to print this out for when I do replace my heater core. :)

No, I didn't read that article. I was replacing the dash skeleton and di the heater core on the way. I feel sorry for any one following the article. Even with all that I removed the core is no more accessible than what you did. Good work!!

Thats cool, its just that whenever anyone asks about heater core replacement, that article gets posted, and its a stupid article written by stupid people. Unless you are over 8 feet tall or weigh 400 lbs, there is no reason why you can't remove the seat and lay on your back to drop it out.

Man am I glad you posted this article! I have been needing to replace my core for 6 months now and was dreading the weekend of being upside down with the dash apart. Thank you. I will try to take some pictures when I do mine using your method. :hurray:

Heater Core Replacement
Thanks for the tip. I just started smelling antifreeze in the driver’s compartment of my ’87 and I thought, oh no, the heater core! I’ll check out your procedure and report back.
