My car is going to the paint shop soon and will have to have the front cap replaced. I am considering doing it myself to save the $600 or so dollars in parts and labor. Does anyone know if this is a straightforward job, or does it require some expertise or special tools? I have checked my Haynes manual and it seems easy enough. Additionally, will any bumper from 1984-1990 fit without modification or fabrication, or do I need an 1987? Finally, anybody got a used bumper for sale?
Re: 1987 Front Bumper Removal/Installation (Skydiver)
I suspect 87 is similar to 84 I had. To replace a cracked turn sig/driving light cluster, I oped the helms manual and it said "remove bumper. Its much easier to do in hot weather. After removing bolts on top between the bumper and hood when open, it literally had to be sorta peeled off.
Also, these bumpers are famous for developing ridges. One solution I saw was to epoxy reasonably heavy gauge sheet aluminum under the urethane bumper and then having it block sanded before painting. :seeya

Hey Sky, I have the front bumper off of mine right now.... getting ready for paint.
It's pretty straight forward, but there are alot of little bolts holding it on. I didn't count but about 35 of em. There are some in the wheel wells, and some holding the lower air dam, on both sides, the drivers side has the charcoal canister over the top of the nuts, so you have to loosen it to get to them. I think it took me about an hour and a half to get it off. I hope to be spraying mine this weekend.

Re: 1987 Front Bumper Removal/Installation (Skydiver)
I just had my nose and tail refurbished last month... The body guys showed me the book that lists approx 8hrs labor for R&R the front bumper... It's very involved from what I was told...
When I picked the car up, they told me that they had to remove it a second time as it didn't quite line up on the first attempt... I've heard that is most difficult part of the C4 body wise to align correctly...
