Default Here's a weird problem! Can anyone help?

I'm driving my 1992 roadster with my son and I feel a very slight miss. I look at the warning lights and the check engine soon light is lit. This is followed by the check asr light. Next the security light starts to flash and the speedo goes to zero and stays there. All the warning lights except the asr reset. All the warning lights start to come on then go off repeatedly! After sitting for a few hours everthing is fine?? Next time out same thing happens. It's now at the dealer and all they can find is the battery is bad. No codes nada. I'm replacing the battery anyway but what do ya think? Any help is greatly appreciated. :( Thanks Steve aka jsquat

If it isn't the battery, it's the ECM. Same thing happend to me on a rebuit one. It was under warranty so a quick swap cured the problem(s).

I believe you'll find it is the battery. First, it's way cheaper to replace that than the computer. Second, the reason people believe it's the computer is because everything works off that, but the fact is the lack of power causes the computer to go crazy and you get exactly the reaction you're getting. I've had it happen on a corvette, z-28 and trans am. Dealers and repair shops love to tell you it's the computer for the money they make.

If the battery doesn't do it, so you blew $70.

Oh well it was worth a shot but it looks like it isn't the battery. As the dealer was road testing everything lit up again. I also just replaced the spark plugs.

OK, so its NOT the battery  Ther dealer found some codes, but didn't know how to handle them? So they called tech support! Tech stated they have only had 2 documented cases like this and in both cases replacing the ECM resolved the problem. But they also said the problem could be a short or a loose wire behind the dash  or one of the other onboard computers!! I"ll have to keep my fingers crossed as this is starting to get really annoying and expensive!? :banghead: :cuss :cuss :cuss
