It is true that the tourqe converter can multiply the tourqe but it is still not as hard on the transmission.
Think about what happens when you side step the clutch at 4000 rpm. You have some slack in the transmission gears and rear end ... enough to make the clutch bite. Now you don't have a tource multiplication by 3 ... You have a tourqe peak that could break almost anything if the tires hook up and the clutch don't slip.
