My 86 coupe has the pre-converters on the front Y pipe. I am looking for a little more exhaust noise, and I replaced the muflers with Targa units from MidAmerica...still quiet as a mouse.
I noted that Corvette central sells a Y pipe without precats that is supposed to be 49 state legal....anyone doe this, and does it increase the exhaust noise any????thanks
ZOG..when i bought my 87' it had a stock y pipe but somebody hacked the cats off and welded in pipe, looks cheap, but it worked for him i guess.i still got the O2 hook up too. i have my main cat and 2 cmbr flows and its loud! not killer but yeah, its alot meanier and has great performance offerings.the guy who previously owned my car smogged the car like that here in cali! yeah,in CALI.u should have a problem smogging it in your state, but about a 15hp mabye 20hp gain should be reasonable. it passed the sniff test no problem with horrible timing. i wanna remove my main cat now to see how much more it preforms for the track and how loud it will be.
Agreed..it will be a little bit louder.I have the catless Y and had both the flowmasters at one time on the rear, and now running muffler eliminators with LT1 tips on them.SOunds pretty good to me.I may eventually go back to flows though,if they havent rusted while sitting in storage.Flows are a little quieter than the eliminators which I prefer a bit more but both deliver a nice rumble.
I removed mine and my 87 has a much improved sound and probably a bit more hp. I ended up purchasing a front y for an 85 from Advance auto for about $130 i think and had a muffler shop hack off the end that connects to the main cat..they also rounded out the end to fit my cat prefectly...they charged me somewheres around 10 bucks..then i took it home and bolted her on...pretty cheap and pretty easy
