Hey LD,
Im kicking myself because I knew the answer for sure and cant remember it 100%. I think they call them saginaw fittings on the GM ones.LPE or accel also sells a kit to let someone attach the GM saginaw fittings to say a braided line fitting, which I used for attaching the braided lines under the car to the GM lines at the filter area. One line was 3/8 feed and the return line was(cant rem the exact size right now).
The kit is mainly to attach GM TPI fuel rails to braided fittings but can be use elsewhere.
Is your MR using 6N fittings or something?
Im gonna go check my books and get back when I can.Its been over 2 years since Ive done the conversion so my memory is foggy on it.
Re: L-98 Fuel line fitting thread size ? (Bill's86Coupe)
If I remember correctly, one is 16mm SAGINAW, and the other is smaller, but I don't know its exact size. Most hydraulic shops will have the correct size adapters on hand. HTH's
They're definitely not pipe threads. The o-ring does all the sealing. Glad you asked this question ld85. I'm doing the same thing right now. I was planning on making my own fittings by having some hex stock machined for the o-ring fitting on the fuel lines and then welding some AN nipples on them. I'll check an industrial hydraulic supply house tomorrow and see if they have anything off the shelf that will work.
Yo LD,
I havent been able to find my papers on the lines...since moving and so many things got boxed up and havent gone through it all yet,I dont know when Ill find the stuff....oh boy.Keep me posted if you do find out the size.
Ill check here as well.
I checked a local hydraulic supply house, an Aeroquip industrial dealer, and they didn't have anything. But, Earl's sells a female Saginaw to AN-6 adapter. There are actually 2 sizes: 16mm (#9894DBJ) and 14mm (#9894DBH). I think they're even aluminum. Summit has them for $8/ea. I ordered some. I'll let you know at the end of the week if they're going to work or not.
I just did mine last year, and can't remember the exact sizes. I do remember where I got my fittings from. Murrays carries repair pieces that are about 2 inches long with the fitting and o ring on them. I used those and on the other end installed an AN B nut, ferrule, and flared them to my #6 lines.
I got those Earl's parts in from Summit today. They were right on the money.
Earl's #9894DBJ (16mm)
Earl's #9894DBH (14mm)
They are made of aluminum (blue anodized) with a -6 AN nipple on one side and a female Saginaw on the other. This way if you're running a Stealthram or Miniram you can use the stock L98 fuel lines to plumb the custom fuel rails.
I was just about to cut the flares off of the exsisting lines and re-flrae them to a new size of fitting.
I will go to Earls today. I think the inlet feed line is short @ 6 inches or so and the return line runs the length of the valve cover. I will likely just order a length of braided line and make them to the length I need.
Was it like 3-5 bucks a foot?(if you bought the braided lines ) The fittings I got for the aeroquip lines were real expensive too..If you never installed the braided hoses or cut them before, let me know and ill give you easy tips.Dont try cutting them with a hacksaw,I used a cut off wheel which makes a better cut but sparks will fly. That stuff is very strong.
Re: L-98 Fuel line fitting thread size ? (Bill's86Coupe)
To add to what Bill's86Coupe stated:
Definately run tape around the braided line, mark where it needs to be cut and cut with a die grinder and cut off wheel.
Re: L-98 Fuel line fitting thread size ? (CentralCoaster)
All those fuel lines and nuts are steel. Who in there right mind would use aluminum threaded fittings for fuel?
Whom you ask,,,, Indy Cars, Drag Cars, and many others, pretty much whenever you see the red and blue and black anodized fittings you are looking at aluminum.
Take a look inte Earls, Jegs, SUmmit Catalogs, 90% of all of the fittings are aluminum. Plus most times your dealing with low PSI's
I will admit that they are soft and I would have preferred SS but they had a very limited selection.
Re: L-98 Fuel line fitting thread size ? (CentralCoaster)
;)
Don't forget (edit) lots of (/edit) aircraft flying right now have aluminum fuel lines and fittings. Ditto for the Champ cars. The mil specs for fittings usually call for 7075 material if I remember correctly.
LD85: That's actually not an inverted flare connection--there's an o-ring there instead of a flare. I didn't know this until recently but it's called a "Saginaw" connection. It's a GM thing. I think the fittings we bought were intended to be used as power steering adapters were Saginaw connections are common.

You are right, he did call them a Saginaw fitting, and price aside it will look waaaayyy
Dang it! My fittings didn't come with o-rings. Looks like they're a weird metric size. Couldn't find exact duplicates at a local o-ring supply house but got something that looks like it will work. I guess we'll find out.
