My driver side window stopped working, it gave me a little warning and now it's stuck half way down.
I'm reading about window regulators and such. Is it common to have to replace the regulator or is this simply a matter of replacing a failed motor. I've not had any problems with the window alignment and such, just no more up/down motion.
Also, the weather stripping on that window needs to be replaced. Should I do both windows just to be safe?
the motors have a tendency to blow... I would replace just the broken one. I did that, and my passengers motor is still working fine! To make the window go back up one last time, slam the door. that should free the motor brushes.
they are easy enough to change, just a bitch to realign.
Use a sharpie to mark the alignment bolts on the door and the window.
This will assist in getting the glass back where it belongs.
You will have to remove the regulator and drill the rivets out. get some screws with nylon locking nuts to replace the rivits. make sure the screws have flat rounded heads - that will provide more clearance inside the regulator.
I agree with the blown motor assessment, but just to be safe I'd make sure you check the window switches for corrosion first. This is much easier than taking the whole door apart. You can just disconnect the switches, and jumper across connector on the wiring harness as a quick check to see if power is getting to the motor.
More than likely your motor is bad. And the door slam trick wouldn't work for me because the tiny springs that held the brushes against the windings had broken. Here's hoping it's just corroded door switches! :)
Thanks for the quick replies. I'll check out the switch, slam the door and replace the motor if needed. Perhaps I'll get it out of the garage before the end of April.
The '96 has the best regulators made for the corvette and very rarely fail. You most likely need either a switch or a motor. This works on my '93 door panel: Take off the two screws inside the hand grab area and then pry up that assy. There are two spring clips at the parting line that helps to retain the whole assy at the top by the mirror control. You can then pull out the whole pwdw/mirror unit as one without removing the door panel. Check for power to the switch to make sure it is functioning correctly. You could also try jumpering the harness to see if the motor works without the switch, BUT use caution because it is a 30 AMP circuit and will melt stuff pretty nice. I know, my switch did the china syndrome on me. Get a new part from Jeff Kopp at Superior Chevy. 800-728-8267. My switch was $80 + ship.
