what scan software/ 1985 vette- Problem Solved!!! 4-23-03
I am having problems with WinALDL, cant get data from the car. Anyone have this problem? any solutions? What are you guys running to scan 85's, I see in datamasters web site they dont list an application for 85's. I see mike 1985 uses auto xray, but would like other suggestions and/or links.
Yes, tried with and without. The main part of my problem ( I thought) was the lack of a DB9 serial conector on my laptop. Ive since bought two different USB to serial adapters. With the first one, WinALDL couldnt access the com port- no matter what com port I selected ( with the adapter labeled COM2 in my device manager). The second adapter works with WinALDL (says OK next to COM2) but I get no data from the car. I used the cable schematic from the WinALDL site, the one with external 12v supply. I reviewed my cable assembly numerous times and am sure its correct. Still no data. So I thought it may be the USB/serial adapter- so I loaded the software into my old desktop with a serial port, and it didnt get data either. I attach the cable to the car and computer, turn the key on (but not run), then open the program and get no data. Also tried with engine running prior to opening program with same results. PLEASE HELP!! I recently learned the data port of the ALDL is either 5v or 12v, so Im gonna check for that voltage when Im off work to make sure theres not a problem with the car. Any suggestions entertained, thanks. -Jim
I hate to say it, and do not understand why your direct conenction to the other laptop with a serial port doesn't seem to work, but using a USB-to-serial adaptor is no surprise not working. It might be your cable, but a USB adapter is not meant to be exactly the same as a serial port. It works differently, being controlled by your cpu itself..
WinALDL does not access the hardware in the serial port. It just opens a 2400 baud com port and reads. I know that people have used an USB to serial adapter with sucess. I don't know what brand.
Do you have access to a TBI truck? You can verify that the cable and USB to serial adapter is working on another vehicle.
What transistor are you using.
I have heard that RadioShack had a batch of transistors that came with a pinout description that was wrong.
Found my problem !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I couldnt get it to work on my computer with a serial port, Iknew I needd to start looking at other variables. Checked the cable numerous more times, even checked output voltage of the data port of the ALDL on my car, everything was good. Then I decided to check for data voltage at the computer end of the cable and got nothing. I found a site on a link from WinALDL that shows a simple test for the cable, and mine passed! Then I was really puzzled...... So I started to check the transistor and found no voltage going in - turns out, my cable was good, but I used the external power source and used a cigarette lighter to plug into. My lighter plug was corroded not letting me get full voltage. Bypassed the plug and instant data!! I guess you just gotta check the small things sometimes..... Thanks to all who tried to help!
