How noisy would you say the lifters are on a L98 with 21K miles on her. My top end sounds like I got solid lifter chatter on both sides...a lot of clicking. Is this normal for an L98?

Are you sure it's not the injectors? My injectors are LOUD  :yesnod: When I first bought the car I was a little worried after I got used to the new noises, and actually started to hear the little ticks, and clacks. Got busy with the stethescope and it turned out to be my injectors.

No, I'm not sure it's not the injectors but I feel more sure it's the lifters. I mean, you can hear them chattering inside the valve cover pretty distinctly. However, a stethoscope is a darn good idea!

Let me try to elaborate on the loudness of the injectors. I can hear them while I'm IN the car windows up or down while idleing in the driveway. Hope this helps with your diagnosis. Sears has a decent automotive stethescope, can't remember exactly, but I believe I paid $20 for mine a couple years ago.

Oil pressure normal? Oil level correct? Unusal for all the lifters or valves to be noisy on a low mileage engine that hasn't been touched from the factory (unless it wasn't screwed together quite right or there's a few more miles than what's showing on the clock). If it is under the covers, try changing the oil using a quality 5/30 dino.
Re: lifter or valve chatter - 88 L98 Auto (JCAIRE2)
I put the steth on and I think you're right on the injectors. However, #8 cylinder sounded a little rough...like she was dry.
Am I wrong or is there a know problem on the #8 cylinder on the L98? I thought I remember reading 'bout this somewhere...something to do with heat??? Could of even been a different motor. Not sure. Any thoughts/comments on this out there?

I'm not totally sure, but I believe there is indeed a good chance of running lean in cyliders 7&8. Glad you got it narrowed down though. Could be a bad injector possibly. Hopefully, someone with more knowledge can help.
