I am just getting into the vette game and have two or three cars I am looking at to purchase. One is a 95 w/ 80K miles which I know is a MAF system, but my question is do 92s and 93s have MAF systems or are they speed density? I know that in 94 F-bodies switched to MAFs, but I dont know when vettes did. Also what are the pros and cons of speed density systems? Is 92 a good year?
Sorry for all the ?s, but I am buying one of the 3 this weekend so I need to know all about them.
thanks
brad
92-93 are speed density, 94-96 are MAF'ed. The differences are only significant if you're making major mods. I wouldn't let the difference make your choice, go for the best car.
SD systems are better for a high hp car, like over 450hp. Tuning is a little harder for them and they dont respond well to minor mods sometimes. MAF is quite good until you get to those high Hp situations.
MAF is more tunable, and works with realtime conditions. MAP reacts a little more slowly, and does extra number crunching to calculate the parameters it needs from the MAP and ECT data.
MAF is better until you start needing to suck so much air into the engine that the physical size of the MAF becomes your limiting restriction.
In 1994, the engine management changed from multipoint injection to sequential injection. Sequential injecton has a better 'coolness' factor - it's better for emissions and fuel economy, and more elegant.
I suggest you go here and read these links, Afterwards you will probably know more than most people do about the way the systems work and your eyes feel like they are gonna fall out of your head. :D But you will be one smart ****, if you can get through it and understand it all. http://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/show...hreadid=174742
I know my hand hurt from typing the past few days. Its really quite infomative! You will see a bunch of people that were dye hard SD freaks, change their tune real quick.
You might want to look at what option "RPO" numbers each one has. I would opt for a '95 if really given a choice because of the Opti issue, PCM is flashable, 13" brakes are standard, drivers door has express down window, and all the parts are 3 years newer. :) And I have a '93 since sigs aren't working right now.
What the hell is a RPO #? Is it like rear end gears and other options on the inside of the door? Sorry for the stupid question, but I have been a mustang/F-body guy my whole life so this will be my first vette.
thanks

Given equal condition I'd go for the 95 with 20K more miles (80K is nothing, really). There were many subtle improvments in those years. Not the least of which is the better optispark (LT1speak for distributor).
Unless the 92 is a killer deal. That might swing it.
Rule of thumb, get the newest best condition Vette you can afford.
