Is there no fan speed control? My 86 has 10 speeds! When the motor wears out it can run but not at its potential. A little more info on your problem would help.
If your blower motor and controls are working fine your coil might be blocked up. If you remove your blower motor and look inside the hole carefully you can see the bottom of the coil, it is mounted in the black box to the right of the blower opening. If it is dirty there were instructions posted here explaining how to clean it. It is a pain to do but works great when done. Do a search you should find it.
One of the major problems for the A/C is the vacuum lines. Make sure that their are no vacuum leaks and all the fittings are in good shape. The main one that pertains to the A/C comes off one of the 2 vacuum ports on the pass. side of the upper plenum and is shared with the cruise control via a vacuum regulator/t-fitting. If this piece cracks or there is a leak anywhere on the lines pertaining to the a/c, the blower won't blow hard or change speeds.
If all that is good, it's probably the blower motor going off to the big corvette in the sky.
If that's the case, I have a brand new blower motor I never used on my '86 I can sell you. I bought both types, one with the impeller and one without because supposedly they were different, switching sometime in '86. Turns out they were identical except one had a new impeller on it. I used the one with the new impeller and bolted on the old impeller to the other unit I never used. If you end up needing it, email me.
I have to look into this too. Only difference is mine also doesn't blow cold at all. :D I have to have the system charged and also replace my blower control module as that is shot and lets the blower run even with the car is off.
To check the blower motor, disconnect it and run a direct line from the battery (supplying a ground of course). If it's now ok, the module or the assembly is probably the culprit. If the heater blows strong; but the a/c is weak, the evaporator may be plugged. From the factory, the blower side is filtered and if it's leaking, it gets covered in a/c oil which eventually blocks air flow. Only solution is to replace it.
