The little "Plug" that sits on the end of the block up against the cylinder heads ( the ones that is rasied ), is that just to help guide the heads and gasget when you mount the heads? Or is doing something else??
yepp that is the one.. Does it do annything special but 1) hold the gasket in place, 2) hold the head in place, while you tighten it?? It does not block any oil path or something vital?
yeah I did. I lost 2 of min during the take off my old heads. So I used only 1 plug on each side. Im not affraid of the head be missalign in annyway, but. Im more affraid that its also there for som other reason.. :(
If I remember correctly, the stud just goes into a hole in the head that goes nowhere.. thus, at least on the LT1, I dont think it is blocking off any kind of passage, so you should be OK.. but hopefully someone can chime in and tell you for sure.
yeah i know but i have already installed my heads without the 2 off the "pins". Im I ok??
You should be fine to the best of my knowledge. I'm pretty sure that the dowels go into blind holes in the heads and that if you pull the dowels from the block they are blind holes also.

Re: head plug?? (scorp508)
These dowel pins make sure the heads are in exactly the correct position on the block and keep the heads from moving around and help make sure the intake is aligned.
yepp I know. I used 1 pin on each head, cause I lost the other 2 :( But should I be OK with this?? I whas very carful with the alignment. im more worried about if they block anny coolant or oil path?
I thought about this a bit this morning devilfish-
I dont know if I would try to install the heads without 2 pins on each side. Those heads need to be aligned PERFECTLY, otherwise you are going to be tearing it down again for a blown head gasket. I know that the head bolts have a little lateral slack in them (they dont totally fill the hole in the head..), which would let you move the head slightly while installing. Not a good thing. I would try to find the old ones, if not, pull one of the remaining pins, and go get something of the same size. Just my 2 cents.
