Default head plug??

The little "Plug" that sits on the end of the block up against the cylinder heads ( the ones that is rasied ), is that just to help guide the heads and gasget when you mount the heads? Or is doing something else??

thanks

Are you talking about that stud?? If so, then yes, its purpose is to 1) hold the gasket in place, 2) hold the head in place, while you tighten it.

yepp that is the one.. Does it do annything special but 1) hold the gasket in place, 2) hold the head in place, while you tighten it?? It does not block any oil path or something vital?

Not that I know of, but I wouldnt try to put a set of heads on without it. And it might be blocking some coolant path, but I dont think so.

If I remember correctly, the stud just goes into a hole in the head that goes nowhere.. thus, at least on the LT1, I dont think it is blocking off any kind of passage, so you should be OK.. but hopefully someone can chime in and tell you for sure.

Leave them in there, they don't harm anything. They are there to hold stuff in place to make it a hell of a lot easier to install.

You should be fine to the best of my knowledge. I'm pretty sure that the dowels go into blind holes in the heads and that if you pull the dowels from the block they are blind holes also.

These dowel pins make sure the heads are in exactly the correct position on the block and keep the heads from moving around and help make sure the intake is aligned.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. They are not connected to the oil or coolant system.

I thought about this a bit this morning devilfish-

I dont know if I would try to install the heads without 2 pins on each side. Those heads need to be aligned PERFECTLY, otherwise you are going to be tearing it down again for a blown head gasket. I know that the head bolts have a little lateral slack in them (they dont totally fill the hole in the head..), which would let you move the head slightly while installing. Not a good thing. I would try to find the old ones, if not, pull one of the remaining pins, and go get something of the same size. Just my 2 cents.
