Nope, you wont mess anything up by wiring in a switch. Just make sure it doesnt run the fans all the time.

The guy working on my 88 wasn't happy with the temp the fan cut in so he disconnected a plu at the front of the engine. He said that the fan will now come on with the engine and cut out at 40mph.

It's not running too hot now, but I haven't checked to see if he was right - anyone else know of this trick ?

How do you check to see if the fan goes off at 40mph ??????

I did that and it works great. I turn them on when I get in traffic or stop and go.

I have a 96 & I got check engine code when I just put in a switch.. I had to get new relay switches & wire a complete separate circuit. I have a red light on my dash hooked to the switch. Now when the fan switch is ON the "RED LIGHT" is also on.. to help "This Old Man" from forgetting to shut it off...

Maybe in an older car without OBDII you don't have to worry about the code light..

I'm in a similar discussion on a different thread. It has just been pointed out to me that running both fans at the same time draws too much current for a stock charging system and will slow the fans reducing their cooling eficiency. I also presume that this is based on running other accesories such as the A/C which is what the discussion is centered on as well as the fans. I also think the indication was that some damage to the charging system may result. Anyone else have a comment on this?

I agree that both fans on will draw alot off the charging system it's not impossible to think that in some cases both fans on if the alternator wasn't keeping up might not cool as well as just the one on the back of the radiator,
I believe vettes have high output alternators so if everythings working right nothing should be damaged....but in the real world that could be a different story...I understand that front fan which my car doesn't have only comes on in stock form at like 240 and maybe with the AC I can't recall...however "damage" isn't the word I would use, maybe just say the charging system might not keep up with everything.....resulting in a weak or dead battery.....

I also agree. If you are in traffic at night with your lights on, both fans running, radio, and other accessories, the electrical system will drain. You can notice that the system, according to the Digital LCD read out, will say somewhere in the 12 range but hopefully no lower like 11 or 10 (which is low, as normal batteries output a voltage closer to 13.3 volts).

I would think that prolonged exposure could result in a low charged battery, and over time, can actually crack the internal plates causing a dead cell, AKA a dead battery. You can damage a battery just as easy by under-charging as by over-charging.

I would suggest to just wire the secondary fan to a swtich (leave the primary to be controlled independently by the cooling/heating system). Since it activates not only at the temp 228 for cooling, but whenever the condensor is turned on (Defrost, Auto, Vent, etc).

Remember to shut them off when you get on the highway or reach speeds, over 35-40mph. The motors are direct drive and not a clutch type. In normal operation, the computer shuts the fans down over a certain speed (not sure what it is off the top of my head) to avoid fast moving air from accelerating the fans and burning out the motors.

Take Care. :flag
