My knock sensor wire sits very close to my headers and this weekend I got in it and notice a huge surge in power....I popped the hood only to find that my knock sensor had ground on the header......Well I thought I fixed the ground problem and drove the car for a couple of days...........
Finally I decided to spray it and when I did I had a huge intake explosion....
I had to unplug the MAF to get the car home......
I searched for vacuum leaks with carb spray but I could not find any.....the only apparent damage was to my filter.....
I found that the knock sensor was still ground somewhere in the harness and it was screwing my timing up bigtime, so that is what I think caused the backfire.....
Well I fixed it....changed the MAF and the car still pops like crazy when I hook it up........
With the maf unplugged it runs fine......
The only codes I threw were a 41----which attributes to a bad prom...after resetting the computer the code didnt come back.......
Do you guys think I probably popped the lower intake gaskets???? Those are the ones you really cant get to to test with ether......
The problem was you did not have enough timing probably when it backfired. The continued poping indicates that you have something still wrong in the MAF, perhaps you damaged the relays or something, if something shorted out, on the MAF when you damaged the first one???
The wires are ok on the MAF sensor.....the autoXray showed that it was reading air input increases with throttle increases......I swapped mass air sensors and it still does the same thing........
You maybe did some damage to a valve and its not seating completely? That is the reason you hear the popping, when you unplug the maf meter your just making the car go into limp home mode, that changes the timing etc....
I would imaging if the explosion was violent enough and at the wrong time. You could easily tell with a leakdown test or even a compression test. That might be where you want to start, that will tell you the integrity of the cylinder's ability to seal. And also if the rings were damaged.
After thinking about it, I would think you would hear the popping all the time if it were a valve, but still a compression or better yet a leakdown is in order. You could have a multitude of things effected.
The boost/laughing gas is fun to play around with, but it has its downsides and can bite you awefully quick. :reddevil
I'm not sure what kind of timing it has with the MAF meter unhooked, but i would really not do that very much. If you ever leave your car running with the ESC unhooked for any amount of time, your headers will start to glow bright red! that is because the timing is so retarded. They will get so hot they will start to melt stuff around them. Just don't want you to do more damage. Internally or externally. Get a guage from Autozone or invest in one. It will tell you much.
