Calling all Xylene and Toluene users
After a few miles, OMG, the car came ALIVE.
At first i was dissapointed, but all of a sudden, when that new mixture hit, it just started to run awesome.
What are everyone else's experiances? :)
FORMULA 1
Toulene
R+M/2...114
Cost...$2.50/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...94.2 Octane
20%...96.4 Octane
30%...98.6 Octane
Notes: Common ingredient in Octane Boosters in a can. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, I.e. from 92 to 92.3. Often costs $3-5 for 12-16 ounces, when it can be purchased for less than $3/gal at chemical supply houses or paint stores.
FORMULA 2
Sample Mixture
To make your own octane booster, it is easiest to make up a large batch, and then bottle it up in "dosage-size" uses.
Below is the basic formula of one of the popular octane booster products. To make eight 16 ounce bottles (128 oz = 1 gal):
100 oz of toluene for octane boost
25 oz of mineral spirits (cleaning agent)
3 oz of transmission fluid (lubricating agent)
This product is advertised as "octane booster with cleaning agent *and* lubricating agent!". Diesel fuel or kerosene can be substituted for mineral spirits and light turbine oil can be substituted for transmission fluid.
personally in my vette I use
1 gal of toluene for octane boost
16oz of mineral spirits (cleaning agent)
4 oz of marvel mystery oil(lubricating agent)
12 oz of 50% nitro (available at model shops for model airplane fuel)

keep in mind that 12 oz of nitro in a 5 gallon of 92 octane gas and one gallon toulene mix may only boost you to about 96 octane but it does tend to stop detonation and make your car engine run very well AFTER YOU LEARN HOW TO TUNE THE ENGINE CORRECTLY to take advantage of the POTENTIAL extra power use the minimum mix that you can to stop all detonation and install that knock sensor L.E.D. or youll never know when you truely have got it under control
I make the mix then put it in 16 oz metal cans, I use the minimum number of the 16 oz cans of the booster mix added to the tank that stops any engine knock under hard acceleration, if your adding the mix to a gas tank with about 5 gallons of gas (the max amount Id want to have in the tank while racing) at the track 2-3 16 oz bottles normally does it, if you were trying to boost a full 25 gallon tank full of gas it would get expensive fast, plus, Id have to ask, why would you want to carry extra weight in the tank while drag racing?
look the idea here is to run faster with less problems, yeah its cheating somewhat, and not legal in some types of racing but for match/grudge racing pretty much anything goes.
but in this case what were doing is finding out if detonation is the source of the noise in DORIAN Ls engine, the booster mix stops detonation so this is a TEST to see if thats his problem WITHOUT moding the engine, Im assumeing hes timed his engine correctly AND adjusted both the ignition curve and fuel/air mix from the carb CORRECTLY, set his valve lash/preload and tuned to get the correct spark plug heat range BEFORE EVEN BOTHERING TO DO OTHER TESTING keep in mind, TOULENE is 114 octane,(the main octane boost )5 gallons of 98 octane plus one gallon of toulene = about 100 octane average http://www.seansa4page.com/resource/octane.html http://www.factorypro.com/tech/fuel_..._vs_power.html

BTW gasoline of posted octaned rating 92 in US is not equivelent to 92 in Europe. The equivalent in Europe is 98 RON.

This tells me one thing about your setup if you noticed huge results on an otherwise stock setup compression wise, you have knock counts that are killing power with the regular gas.
I run the Toluene mixture, but that is because my compression is really high, and detonation with 94 octane gas is inevitable. Let me explain further.
You want the least amount of octane consistant with performance. In other words if your car would take 94 and not get any retard, then you would not want to run a higher octane than that, if anything you would want to run a lower octane till you start to see knock them bump it up a tad. Likewise you do the same with tuning. adjust timing to least advance till you see performance decrease then increase it a little.
The higher octane gas does not burn as fast and therefore does not create the cylinder pressures as quick as the lower octanes, that the reason for the decreased knock. Do to the slower flame propigation, it doesn't give off as much energy as quick and therefore can actually hinder performance.
I can get away with using it because I am making up for the decreased energy by squeezing the charge by nealy 2x what your are with a stock compression ratio, this in itself creates more potential for exposion, and makes up for the decrease that I would have normally seen from the higher octane.
I would suggest instead of spending many dollars and time working with this stuff, you just get your car tuned to the correct timing and you would be just as well off and just have to worry about pulling into the gas pumps for some 94 octane.
I have although read that this stuff is denser than regular gas therefore you would not need as many CCs to make the same AFR. Who knows, and who has time to figure all that out
Toluene works great- price just sucks (and you aren't paying $2.50/ga for it in 2003).
What is the old sang.....How fast can you afford to go?
Welcome to the world of speed. Nothing is free or easy. I just laugh when I see that article that proclaims 2.50/gal, that is back before all the green people decided to come out of the woods and be heard, Idiots should go back into their holes.
ski- yes. for some reason my car is getting about 5 deg of spark retard at upper RPM's. I have yet to look at a run on datamaster with the new mixture, but will soon to see if it is really eliminating the retard, or if i'm the retard thinking its helping me :D
