Default header setups?

How did you solve the A/C and alternator brackets with your short header bolts??

I went to a fastener store nearby that had socket head S/S bolts. I measured the required length and bought that bolt. I also had to grind some of the A/C and Alt support brackets so they didn't rub against the header tube where they are bolted to the header flange. Don't forget the anti seize on those bolts. :yesnod:

Are you talking about the secondary A/C brace that attaches to the compressor and then to the exhaust manifold via a stud or bolt? If so, I simply left mine off when I installed headers and never had a problem. But, if you feel the need to have one I suggest obtaining a 1.5" long piece of 3/8" diameter pipe (steel or aluminum) and a longer header bolt...Use the pipe as the spacer and, well, you know what to do with the longer bolt...

A socket head bolt is a head that uses an allen (hex) wrench. I used these bolts because it is easier to tighten with a torque wrench. besides, on mine I couldn't get a wrench on the regular header bolt.

As far as being unstable, I think it is very stable and it takes the preasure off the A/C and Alt bracket. Remember, you are bolting the headers onto aluminum heads so make sure at least 3/4 of an inch of the header bolt goes into the head. I believe those brackets were put there for a reason, that's why I kept them in there.

Sorry no pics yet. I'm going to buy one of those digital cameras, one of these days.

but wouldent you tight the bracket against "air" cuase you dont have annything between the bracket moutning hole and the header flang??
On the stock "headers" you hade very long bolt "towers" to tight the bracket against..

( hope understand what I mean )

I ground down the heads on the stock exhaust/alt bracket bolts/studs to clear the header tubes. I left enough material on the bolt heads to still tighten the bolts, and at the same time clear the header tubes.

Okay, what kind of headers did you buy? Mine had that "tower" you are talking about on it. So, as said previously, buy a small piece of pipe that has an inside diameter of 3/8" or just enough to pass a header bolt through and treat it as a "standoff" Use flat washers at each end of the pipe. Hope I explained that good enough to follow.

Same thing applies, From that pipe you bought to use as a stand off, cut another section to get that required distance from the head. I can't believe your headers didn't come with these "towers" already on there.

A lot of aftermarket headers don't...My LPE ones didn't, nor do Hookers... I think TPIS' has them, and I believe SLP's shorties do as well...I don't know about EM's...
-Jeb
PS- I solved the dipstick tube problem by buying an aftermarket TransDapt one, it took a little bending work on the tab but it secures nicely straight to the header flange with no need for the "tower" as we've begun to call it...

My hooker 2149s came with a standoff so that you could use the original exhaust manifold bolt and mount the dipstick in the same place as before.

Really?? The 2151's I have on the wife's car didn't. Of course they didn't have an O2 bung either...

My Hooker shorties came with standoffs built in. I still had to use the socket head bolts as the regular 6 or 12 point bolts didn't allow my to use even a thin wall socket, not enough clearance between the bolt head and the tube coming out of the flange. Anyway, the socket head bolts looked better. ;)

I know its ugly but cant you use a hose clamp to fix it against the header pipe?

You own a Vette. Itis supposed to look good as well as run good. Let's not use "Bailing wire and bubble gum" techniques to fix your Vette. Enough of the pep talk

If the pipe for a standoff scares you, How about a nut or two just large enough to slide the header bolts through? If you still have your stock manifolds, measure the thickness at the "towers" and subtract the thickness of the flange on your headers. This will give you how far to standoff from your flange to hold the oil dip stick. Now you can use your stock header studs that allow you to bolt the dip stick on useing a nut (just like the stock set up). Is that clear as MUD

Wish I had a digital camera

hahah you right. Its just that I have put in sooo much time in this car the last month, and im getting fed up with all the "creative" solutions on strange problemes that set me back on time.. So right now I just whant the car to run, then I can solve the cosmetic problemes later :)
But I hear you in the solutions, and im going to use your tips,, thanks for your time..
